In the United States, the scale of internal problems and crises is growing. The famous Vietnam War slogan “Come Home America!” again became relevant among the population of the United States. This is reported by the columnist of The American Conservative magazine, politician and publicist Patrick Buchanan.

“We were an ‘irreplaceable nation’. We could impose our “benevolent global hegemony” on all of humanity. And so we decided to create a “new world order” by plunging into successive wars in Iraq, the Balkans, Afghanistan, again in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen. We bled until half the population echoed [U.S. presidential candidate] George McGovern's 1972 campaign slogan: “Come Home America,” the author writes.

Buchanan believes that amid public disillusionment with foreign policy failures, American citizens should urge Washington to focus on solving domestic problems.

According to the author, the balance of power is changing in favor of the US geopolitical opponents: Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. The attempt to contain such a large number of opponents, as well as huge military spending, led to the formation of a public debt that exceeds the volume of the entire economy of the country. In the United States, social inequality is increasing, the problem of racism remains noticeable, the number of migrants and cases of COVID-19 is growing.

Buchanan comes to the conclusion that the only way out of this situation is to leave the dreams of a bygone era of US global hegemony. He considers it unlikely that the US will be able to pass such a long “stress test” without heavy losses.

On February 2, it became known that the US national debt for the first time exceeded 30 trillion dollars. These figures were disclosed by the Ministry of Finance of the country. It is noted that this figure has become a record for the entire time of its existence.

Earlier, columnists for the American newspaper The New York Times said that potential sanctions that the United States could impose against Russia if the crisis in Ukraine worsens could lead to a “financial panic” and deal a serious blow to the US economy and the world.
