The Japanese government, despite US calls to consider the introduction of anti-Russian economic sanctions, is not going to threaten the use of preventive restrictions, Kyodo news agency reports, citing a government source.
According to sources, the United States through diplomatic channels called on Japan to increase criticism of Russia and join the joint project of sanctions restrictions. However, the Japanese government refused to impose preventive sanctions against Moscow “until the invasion actually happens.”
Representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of Japan, in particular Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and Cabinet Secretary General Hirokazu Matsuno, previously refused to comment on questions about possible measures by Tokyo in the event of an escalation of the conflict due to the lack of direct evidence of “Russian aggression”.
Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Japan Mikhail Galuzin said that Moscow does not recognize Tokyo’s territorial claims on the issue of the southern Kuriles. The diplomat posted a message on the Twitter account of the Russian diplomatic mission as a response to the criticism of US Ambassador Rahm Emanuel.
