The United States backed the decision of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to impose sanctions on several opposition television channels. This was announced on Wednesday, February 3, on the Facebook page of the American Embassy.
“The US supports the efforts to counter the malicious influence of Russia made yesterday by Ukraine in defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and in accordance with Ukrainian law,” the statement said.
The US diplomatic mission also called on Ukraine to work together to prevent disinformation as a “weapon in an information war against sovereign states.”
On February 2, it became known that Zelensky put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on the application of sanctions against several TV channels: 112 Ukraine and regional channels under his logo, as well as ZIK and NewsOne. After his decree, they stopped broadcasting. Personal sanctions have also been imposed on Taras Kozak, a deputy from the Opposition Platform – For Life party, who owns the Novosti media holding. In this regard, the party “Opposition Platform – For Life” initiates the impeachment procedure for Zelensky.
