US stock exchanges recorded longest profit streak since August 2020

The New York stock exchanges closed more tightly on Monday, thus prolonging the most recent soaring. With the Dow and S&P 500 up for the sixth day in a row, Wall Street posted its longest winning streak since August 2020. The Dow Jones started the week up 237.52 units, or 0.76 percent, to 31,385.76 points. The probably best-known stock market index on the US stock exchanges thus marked a new record high.

The S&P 500 Index, which consists of 500 selected US companies, gained 28.76 points (plus 0.74 percent) to 3,915.59 points and thus also reached a new all-time high. The technology index Nasdaq Composite Index rose by a clear 131.34 units or 0.95 percent to 13,987.64 points.

optimism

Despite the pandemic worries, investors are optimistic about the future. At the start of the week, statements by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in particular had given rise to confidence. On the one hand, it campaigned for a new aid package worth billions in the United States. On the other hand, she promised a return to full employment in the USA in the coming year.

Even if the corona pandemic continues to affect the economy, market observers were cautiously optimistic. Most recently, the number of new corona infections in the USA has been falling. In addition, progress is being made with regard to the vaccination campaign against Covid-19.

Oil prices

The rising oil prices also contributed to the positive overall picture. If the pandemic is increasingly pushed back by vaccinations, restrictions on public life could be lifted. In addition to the planned US stimulus package, this would benefit the economy and boost oil demand.

Oil stocks such as Chevron and ExxonMobil were correspondingly strong on Monday, increasing by 2.5 and 4.3 percent respectively. Occidental Petroleum's stocks jumped 12.8 percent at the top of the S&P 100 index.

Walt Disney

The top performers in the Dow were Walt Disney shares, with a price premium of 4.9 percent to $ 190. In the course of trading, the entertainment company's paper had reached a record high of $ 190.64. Disney will report on its past quarter this Thursday.

The papers of the iPhone manufacturer Apple showed with plus 0.1 percent below the performance of the overall market. The South Korean carmaker Hyundai and Kia had rejected weeks of speculation about a possible collaboration in the construction of an Apple car. Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia are currently not in talks with the US company.

The titles of the electric car manufacturer Tesla improved by 1.3 percent. The group had announced that it would also accept payments in Bitcoin in the future when buying cars or other products. Tesla also reportedly bought Bitcoins worth a total of $ 1.5 billion. This in turn set a new record high for the Bitcoin rate of more than $ 43,000.
