The head of the press service of the US Department of State, Ned Price, said that the United States hopes that it will not have to impose sanctions against Russia because of the situation around Ukraine. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to a telephone briefing.

“We hope that the economic response to Russia remains a hypothesis,” said a State Department spokesman.

According to him, “Russia has a good idea of what is meant by the measures that will follow” in the event of an escalation of the situation in Ukraine, but the State Department does not plan to announce them publicly. The United States is using every opportunity to conduct a dialogue on “Russia's military build-up” at the border, Price added.

Earlier on January 4, it was reported that US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, during a telephone conversation with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, discussed coordination between NATO allies, including in the context of “containing” Russia. It is noted that the parties stressed the importance of promoting solidarity and stability in Europe, including support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
