Family members of American officials can voluntarily leave Russia, follows from the updated recommendations of the US State Department posted on the agency's website.
“On August 5, 2021, the Department authorized the voluntary departure of family members of the US government,” the statement said.
At the same time, in the recommendations, the country is still listed among those where tourists are not advised to travel.
“Do not travel to Russia because of the threat of terrorism, harassment by Russian state security agencies, the embassy's limited ability to assist US citizens in Russia, and selective compliance with local laws. Reconsider travel opportunities due to COVID-19 and associated travel restrictions, ”the message said.
In particular, Americans are advised to refrain from traveling to the North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Elbrus, because of the “threats of terrorism, kidnapping and civil unrest.” The State Department also advises not to travel to Crimea, since, according to Washington, this is an “occupied” territory of Ukraine, as well as because of violation of rights by local authorities.
In addition, the website notes that Russian law enforcement agencies have arrested American citizens “on trumped-up charges” and issued judgments “in secret sessions or without presenting evidence.” In addition, Russian officials are accused of unjustified delay in the provision of consular assistance to detained Americans, as well as selective enforcement of legislation against religious workers and international organizations.
“US citizens should avoid traveling to Russia for work purposes or to volunteer for non-governmental organizations,” the statement said. It also discourages Americans from participating in any political or social protests.
In addition, the State Department points to a high risk of contracting coronavirus in Russia and recommends vaccination with a vaccine approved by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In May, Russian authorities added the United States to the list of unfriendly countries. The country's embassy was banned from hiring individuals from Russia. At the end of July, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that in this regard, the American diplomatic mission would have to lay off more than 180 employees.
On August 3, the American embassy in Moscow advised Russians to apply for a visa to visit the United States in other countries.
