The Senate of the US Congress rejected a bill by Republican Ted Cruz (D-Texas) to impose new sanctions against Nord Stream 2. This decision was made during a meeting of the upper house of the legislature, writes TASS.
The document failed to get the required 60 votes (out of 100 possible) for approval.
Under the Cruz bill, it was proposed to impose sanctions on the Russian gas pipeline, as well as organizations responsible for its design, construction and operation, within 15 days after its approval.
At the same time, Congress would have the right to vote for the re-introduction of restrictions if the American president decides to cancel them.
Earlier, the White House opposed Cruz's bill. The US administration doubts that the document will help Ukraine, while it “undermines the unity of European allies.”
On January 12, US Democratic Senator Mark Warner also criticized the bill. He expressed skepticism about the Russian gas pipeline. However, in his opinion, US restrictive measures against Nord Stream 2 will betray the interests of Germany.
