The US Senate passed a bill that allows American courts to pass criminal sentences for doping at events in which American athletes participate. Now the act will go to US President Donald Trump for signature, according to the website of the American Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
The bill is named after the informant of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Grigory Rodchenkov.
“The law establishes penalties for doping fraudulent schemes that rob athletes, citizens and businesses. It also protects whistleblowers from retaliation and provides compensation to athletes who have been cheated as a result of doping collusion, ”the report said.
In July, Rodchenkov called for Russia to be barred from participating in the Tokyo Games. He noted that no exceptions should be made for individual athletes, nor should they be allowed to fly under a neutral flag.
In December 2019, Russia was suspended from participation in international tournaments, as well as from their holding for a period of four years. The decision was made by the WADA Executive Committee. It was associated with manipulations with the database of the Moscow laboratory.
In 2015, Rodchenkov, who previously served as head of the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory, fled to the United States. His testimony formed the basis of Richard McLaren's report on the state system of doping support in force in Russia. Following the investigation, a number of Russian athletes were disqualified and stripped of their awards.
