US President Joseph Biden considers “Nord Stream 2” a bad idea, explained the head of the State Department Blinken. Washington sees in the project a threat to undermine the interests of Ukraine, Poland and a number of US NATO allies.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Brussels
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on Germany to stop building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. US President Joseph Biden has unequivocally stated that he considers this project a “bad idea” – for both Europe and the United States, the head of the State Department said in Brussels at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers on Tuesday, March 23rd.
The pipeline could undermine the interests of Ukraine, Poland and a number of other allies of the North Atlantic Alliance, Blinken added. Washington did not rule out the introduction of new sanctions for participation in the project.
One-year break in pipe-laying and US sanctions on Nord Stream 2
Pipe-laying work for Nord Stream 2 resumed in December 2020 after a one-year break. However, soon construction in the waters of the Federal Republic of Germany was suspended due to environmentalists who protested permission for further work. In Danish waters, construction only resumed in February and is expected to be completed by September. Overall, the project is over 90 percent complete.
The construction of Nord Stream 2 has sparked heated discussions in a number of countries. More and more companies are leaving the project under the threat of US sanctions. The United States believes that the pipeline will make Europe dependent on Russian gas. Washington included the pipe-laying vessel Fortuna and its owner, the KBT-Rus company, in two sanctions lists.
