US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Lead USAID on Interim

This happened after Elon Musk expressed his intention to close the agency.

US President Donald Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

About this The Times reported.

Rubio, commenting on his appointment, said that USAID specialists had failed to provide answers to the new administration's inquiries regarding the organization's funding and priorities.

“That level of insubordination makes it impossible to conduct a serious review. It will stop, and it will end,” Rubio said.

He noted that there are “many functions of USAID that are going to continue,” but that it must be consistent with American foreign policy.

“USAID has a history of sort of ignoring this and deciding that they are somehow a global charity separate from the national interest,” the US secretary of state added.

To the staff USAID has been banned from its headquarters after it was closed. Rubio addressed Congress, announcing that he had handed over the agency's management authority to Peter Marocco, who has already prepared directives to freeze foreign aid and will conduct a review and possible reorganization.

Recall that USAID's page on the social network X has been blocked. It had almost one million subscribers.
