At the current NATO summit, Ukraine lost its status as a priority topic – no promises of membership were made.
The current NATO summit took place without significant participation from Ukraine: President Volodymyr Zelensky remained outside the main discussions, and there was no talk of new large-scale aid packages or clear promises of joining the Alliance.
BILD writes about this.
At the initiative of US President Donald Trump, the final communiqué will not include any mention of Ukraine's prospects for NATO membership. Even the previously promised meeting between Zelensky and Trump is still in question – the American leader only said that he “maybe meet” with him before his departure.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte tried to soften the situation, assuring that the decisions of the last summit in Washington remain in force. However, one thing is clear: Trump is ready to sacrifice Ukraine's prospects for the sake of agreements with Russia.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, however, took the opposite position, calling for stronger sanctions against the Kremlin. “Putin understands only force,” Merz stressed in the Bundestag on the eve of the summit. In The Hague, he also held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
According to BILD, a White House spokesman confirmed that Trump is ready to meet with Zelensky. The meeting of the presidents is scheduled for June 25.
We also wrote that on Wednesday, June 25, President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at the NATO summit in a discreet dark suit – a jacket and trousers. This is the first time during the full-scale war that Zelensky appeared at an international event in a suit instead of his usual militaristic style.
Recall that Donald Trump recently fled the G7 summit in Canada early. At that time, the American politician ignored a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which caused disappointment on the Ukrainian side. His absence was explained by the need to urgently return to Washington.
