Prosecutors in Wisconsin have refused to indict the policeman who shot the African American Jacob Blake while detaining, claiming self-defense.

Protests over the injury of Jacob Blake

The Wisconsin attorney's office has refused to press charges against police officers in connection with the injury of 29-year-old African American Jacob Blake in Kenosha. “No police officer in Kenosha will be charged with a felony in this regard,” District Attorney Michael Gravely said on Tuesday January 5th.

According to him, police officer Rasten Sheski feared that Blake would attack him with a knife, and shot him in self-defense. It would be difficult to prove otherwise in court, Gravely said. Blake will not be charged either, the prosecutor said further.

Jacob Blake incident

On 23 August, the police, who went to a call to a residential building in Kenosha, fired several shots at Jacob Blake. The shots were fired almost at point-blank range in the back in front of three of Blake's children. He had a knife with him and did not obey the demands of the police. As a result, Blake survived, but was partially paralyzed.

In the aftermath of the incident, protests against racism and police violence erupted in Wisconsin, which escalated into riots. US President Donald Trump called them “domestic terrorism” and sent about 1,000 National Guard fighters to Kenosha, and the Department of Justice – more than 200 employees of the FBI, the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Department, and Bailiffs …

Protests in the United States after the death of George Floyd

In 2020, massive protests against racism and police violence took place in the United States and several other countries, which began after the death of African American George Floyd in late May in Minneapolis during his detention by white police officers.

A policeman who strangled Floyd with his knee for about nine minutes during his arrest was subsequently arrested. He was charged with negligent murder, and later the charge was re-qualified to a more serious degree – from third to second. The other three police officers involved in Floyd's arrest were charged with aiding the murder by the Minnesota attorney's office.
