US opposes Israeli occupation of Gaza – Blinken

by alex

The US stressed that the Palestinian people must play a central role in their governance in Gaza.

The United States opposes any reoccupation of the Gaza Strip by Israel.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated this while speaking at the G-7 meeting in Tokyo on November 8, NBC News reports.

An American diplomat reacted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement that his country would bear “shared responsibility for the security” of the Palestinian enclave after the war.

“Gaza cannot continue to be ruled by Hamas, but it is also clear that Israel cannot occupy Gaza,” Blinken said.

He stressed that some kind of transition period may be required at the end of the conflict, but the Palestinian people will have to play a central role in their governance in both Gaza and the West Bank.

Let us recall that Reuters wrote that US President Joe Biden during a telephone conversation asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to suspend the operation in Gaza.
