A potential Russian invasion of Ukraine would lead to a build-up of NATO forces near the Russian borders, rather than remove them. This was stated by a high-ranking official of the US administration, quoted by RIA Novosti.
“We and our allies are ready to impose tough measures that will damage the Russian economy and lead to exactly what Russia does not want: more NATO potential is closer, not further from the Russian borders,” the American official said, adding that these words were conveyed through Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin.
Earlier, the secretary general of the alliance Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO has never made promises not to expand eastward, thereby rejecting the accusations of Russian President Vladimir Putin that NATO “cheated” Moscow.
