US Navy submarines received “killing” Russian UAV ships

The US Navy has received submarine-launched unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Submarine-Launched Unmanned Aerial System (SLUAS) system, which allow to solve target designation tasks beyond the line of sight of submarines, Seapower reports, citing a statement by Rear Admiral Dave Goggins.

The said system, launched “from periscope depth and controlled at tactically significant distances,” the military called “a pretty amazing opportunity for the fleet.” According to the rear admiral, during the exercise, SLUAS was used for a torpedo attack on a surface ship. The publication notes that currently 21 SLUAS drones, which are equipped with five submarines, were involved in the corresponding demonstrations of the US Navy.

In October, it became known that the new American Navy Hammerhead mine would become a “killer” of enemy submarines. In particular, the Poseidon nuclear underwater drone being created in Russia.

In July 2008, The Register reported that the German company Gabler had begun creating an unmanned aerial reconnaissance system for submarines, which was designated coVert OpticaL Airborne reconnaissance Naval adapted System (VOLANS).
