The US military spotted two Russian Tu-142 aircraft in the Alaska air defense identification zone. This was reported by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) on Twitter.
The incident took place at approximately 19:00 North American Eastern Time (03:00 Moscow time). “The NORAD command in Alaska identified and tracked two Russian Tu-142 naval patrol aircraft that entered the Alaska air defense identification zone,” the command said in a statement.
It is noted that Russian aircraft remained in the international airspace and did not violate the US-Canadian air border.
On August 31, 2020, Mike Pompeo, then Secretary of State, said that the United States had noticed an increase in Russian military activity in the Alaska region and other regions.
