US military plane crashes: there are casualties

Eyewitnesses to the tragedy saw the plane smoking in the sky and heard an explosion before it crashed to the ground.

One U.S. service member and three defense contractors were killed Thursday, Feb. 6, when a light aircraft hired by the U.S. military crashed in the south Philippines.

This is reported by AP News with reference to a statement from the US Indo-Pacific Command.

“The aircraft was conducting a routine mission to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support at the request of our Philippine allies,” the command said in a statement.

At the time of publication, the exact cause of the crash has not been established, all circumstances of the tragedy are under investigation.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines also confirmed the crash of a light aircraft in the province of Maguindanao del Sur. No further details have been released.

Local authorities said they found the bodies of four people under the wreckage of the plane. Their names have not yet been released.

Local disaster relief specialist Windy Beaty told reporters that eyewitnesses to the crash saw the plane smoking in the sky and heard an explosion before it crashed in a field less than a kilometre from a farming community. A buffalo grazing in the field also died as a result of the crash.

Recall that on February 6, a Tecnam P-2002JF Sierra light aircraft crashed in Myachkovo, Moscow Region. The two people on board were killed. After the accident, the plane burned out completely.
