The US emphasizes that the Chinese social network TikTok poses a real threat to US national security.
The US Department of Justice has asked a federal appeals court to uphold an April law requiring the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok's American assets by 19 January.
Reuters reports this.
The Justice Department claims that TikTok poses a serious threat to national security due to its access to large volumes of Americans' personal data. The report notes that China can secretly manipulate the information Americans consume through TikTok.
“The serious national security threat posed by TikTok is real. TikTok provides the Chinese government with the means to undermine U.S. national security in two primary ways: data collection and covert content manipulation,” the U.S. Department of Justice noted.
The Biden administration has asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to dismiss lawsuits filed by TikTok, parent company ByteDance, and a group of TikTok creators seeking to block a law that could ban the app.
Recall that on March 13, 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives supported a bill that would banning the Chinese social network TikTok in the country under certain conditions.
