In the US, the number of initial jobless claims has decreased significantly
In the US, the number of initial jobless claims has fallen significantly. In the week ending January 23, 847,000 applications were made, according to the US Department of Labor. That is 67,000 fewer applications than the week before. Economists expected an average of 875,000 initial applications.
However, the value for the previous week has been revised upwards. Accordingly, 914,000 applications were submitted. The ministry had initially only reported 900,000 applications.
The initial applications reflect the short-term development of the labor market in the world's largest economy. Despite the current decline, the situation remains tense. For comparison: Before the corona crisis, the weekly applications were mostly only around 200,000.
