US House of Representatives Supports George Floyd Police Reform

by alex

The US House of Representatives supported police reform, named after the African American George Floyd. Reported by RIA Novosti.

220 MPs spoke in favor of the George Floyd Police Justice Act, while 212 congressmen opposed. At the same time, the House of Representatives has already passed this bill in the summer of 2020, but it was not approved by the Senate. Now, the Democrats, who have gained control over both houses of parliament, can freely accept it.

It is noted that the reform involves a ban on the use of suffocation by police officers and the selection of suspects on the basis of religion or race. In addition, it is planned to create a base on police abuse and weaken the doctrine of “qualified immunity”, which protects law enforcement officers from legal action.

Earlier, a California resident died after a police officer used knee strangulation on him. The incident took place on December 23 in Antioch, California. The family of 30-year-old Angelo Quinto called the police when the man suffered a paranoia attack. By the time the police arrived, Kinto had already begun to calm down in his mother's arms, but one of the officers knocked him to the floor and pressed his knee on his neck for five minutes until the man passed out.

At the end of May 2020, protests for the rights of blacks began in the United States under the slogan Black Lives Matter (“Black lives are important”). The reason was a number of high-profile deaths, including Floyd, who died as a result of a brutal arrest: the man was strangled at the time of the arrest by the police. Soon, the actions of the police became the cause of mass pogroms throughout the country. Protesters reported unfair treatment of blacks.
