Evan Gershkovich was released from prison two weeks after the court verdict was announced.
Russia has released Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich from prison. Tomorrow, August 2, the journalist will return to the United States.
This was reported by the Fox News channel
The release of Gershkovich, who spent 15 months in a Russian pretrial detention center, took place as part of a large prisoner exchange between the Russian Federation and other countries.
The reporter was detained by the FSB in March 2023 on charges of “espionage”.
Evan Gershkovich became the first foreign journalist accused of espionage by Russia since the end of the Cold War. Before his arrest, the reporter worked in Russia for about six years. The last article he wrote before his arrest was about the Wagner PMC and the so-called “SVO” in Ukraine.
Let us recall that less than two weeks ago, on July 19, at a closed trial in Yekaterinburg, Gershkovich was found guilty and sentenced to 16 years in a maximum security penal colony. At the trial, the journalist did not admit his guilt.
