The United States has denied involvement in the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. State Department spokesman Ned Price said this, RIA Novosti reports.
Price recalled that the United States immediately condemned the attempted coup in Turkey when it happened, and was in no way involved in it. He called the statements of Turkish officials to the contrary “completely false.” According to the State Department spokesman, such statements do not correspond to Turkey's status as a NATO ally and strategic partner of the United States.
According to Interfax, earlier Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu in an interview with the Hurriyet newspaper said that there was no doubt that America was behind the coup attempt. He expressed the opinion that the American side supports the organization of the Turkish preacher Fethullah Gülen, who lives in the United States, whom the Turkish authorities consider the main putschist.
On July 15, 2016, an attempted coup d'etat took place in Turkey, as a result of which 248 people were killed, and more than 2.7 thousand were injured. After these events, mass purges took place in the republic in the authorities, special services, courts, the army, educational institutions, about 50 thousand people were arrested, more than 140 thousand people lost their jobs.
