US critical infrastructure is under threat: FBI warns of attacks by Chinese hackers

by alex

According to the FBI, Chinese hackers are preparing to paralyze critical infrastructure in the United States in order to sow panic.

FBI Director Christopher Wray reported that Chinese hackers with ties to the government have already gained access to the computer networks of 23 US companies and are waiting for the “right moment to deliver a crushing blow” to critical US infrastructure.

Reuters writes about this.

According to the FBI, the Chinese hacker group Volt Typhoon penetrated the systems of critical infrastructure enterprises, in particular, companies providing energy, water, and telecommunications services.

Christopher Ray noted that China is developing “the ability to physically wreak havoc on our critical infrastructure at a time of its choosing.”

“His plan is to hit civilian infrastructure below the belt to try to cause panic,” the FBI director emphasized.

The FBI believes that the hackers' intentions are consistent with the plans of the Chinese authorities to prevent US interference in Beijing's plans to retake Taiwan.

However, Beijing denied its involvement in the hacker attacks. A spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry said the government has no ties to the Volt Typhoon extortion gang.

Recall that the United States and Britain accuse China of a large-scale cyber attack that could affect millions of people. Even the spouses of high-ranking US officials and legislators have become targets.
