Mike Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has condemned the Iranian authorities for the execution of the athlete Navid Afkari, convicted of murder during anti-government demonstrations in the country two years ago. He wrote about this on Twitter.

According to him, the execution of the death sentence is “a heinous and cruel act.” “We condemn him in the strongest terms. This is an outrageous attack on human dignity even by the disgusting standards of this regime, ”the US Secretary of State stressed, adding that official Iran will not be able to drown out the voices of the people.

“Today, together with the family of Navid Afkari and all Iranians, we mourn his death at the hands of this cruel and ruthless regime. His life and his death will not be forgotten, ”concluded Pompeo.

Iranian authorities executed the athlete despite appeals from the international community, including US President Donald Trump and UFC head Dana White. In particular, the American leader called for pardoning the athlete, stating that the only act of the athlete-wrestler was participation in an anti-government rally.

Afkari was sentenced to death on September 2. The 27-year-old received two death sentences for participating in anti-government rallies in 2018. The Human Rights Activists News Agency writes that the fighter was tortured to force him to confess to the crimes.
