The US Army is awaiting a contract with Lockheed Martin for the purchase of second generation (2.0) test equipment for Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) missiles, Defense Blog reported.
The publication notes that the corresponding equipment should replace the equipment version 1.0, in particular ammunition and launchers. In total, it is planned to purchase 30 updated sets of weapons for testing.
In December 2019, Brigadier General John Rafferty said that in the European theater of hypothetical military operations, the PrSM surface-to-surface missile being developed for the US Army would kill Russian air defense systems (for example, the S-400 Triumph), while in Tikhiy the ocean, the target of weapons will be Chinese warships. The military, who attended the first PrSM flight tests held in December of the same year, noted that the weapons under development are part of the US Army's efforts to support the US Air Force (Air Force) and Navy (Navy) in possible multi-domain operations.
The PrSM missile should enter service in the United States in 2023. The first update (the ability to track and destroy moving targets, depending on their radio emission) weapons can get in 2025. Currently, the maximum range of the PrSM is 499 kilometers, but this figure can be increased to 550 kilometers, since the United States and Russia are not bound by the obligations under the Treaty on Shorter and Medium-Range Missiles.
