The US Department of Defense reported that about 100 US military personnel have participated in “prohibited extremist activities” in the past nine months. Checks were carried out in the active army and in the National Guard. This is stated in the Pentagon report published on the official website of the defense department.
It says that over the past nine months, about a hundred extremist soldiers have been found in the ranks of the army and the National Guard. They will be suspended from their service until the end of the official proceedings.
The inspection of the ministry was initiated after the publication of a memorandum by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on April 9, 2021. The document announced immediate action to counter extremist activities and the creation of a departmental working group “to identify dangerous elements.”
In a new memorandum dated December 20, 2021, the head of the Ministry of Defense stressed that the Pentagon will continue to fight internal threats that could “undermine the cohesion of the units.”
Earlier, the Pentagon was accused of underestimating the number of civilian deaths during military operations in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. The New York Times conducted its own open source investigation and interviews with survivors of the airstrikes. “It is impossible to determine the total number of victims, but one thing is for sure: it is much higher than the Pentagon admitted,” the newspaper claims.
