US approves $360 million arms sale to Taiwan

The US State Department approved the possible sale of unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles to Taiwan worth about $360 million.

According to the Voice of America, citing a report from the Pentagon Security Cooperation Agency, the United States is required by law to provide Taiwan, which is claimed by China, with means of protection, despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties.

As stated by the Pentagon, arms sales to Taiwan will help improve security and maintain political stability, military balance and economic progress in the region.

China recently began military exercises around Taiwan, increasing pressure on the peninsula following the inauguration of President Lai Qingde.
