US and South Korea to hold largest military exercise in 5 years – Voice of America

Pyongyang protested this exercise and threatened to take “unprecedentedly strong measures.”

On Friday, March 3, the US and South Korea announced the largest military exercise in five years. They will take place in the coming weeks.

This is reported by the “Voice of America” with reference to a joint press conference of the military from the United States and South Korea.

They said they would conduct Freedom Shield, a command post exercise using computer simulations, on March 13-23 to strengthen their defense and response capabilities. The two countries will also hold a large-scale joint Warrior Shield FTX field exercise. The representative of the US military noted that the exercises will also include practicing a joint landing.

Pyongyang protested this exercise and threatened to take “unprecedentedly strong measures.” It is likely that the DPRK will respond to them with missile tests, because the country equates such exercises with a rehearsal for an invasion.

Recall that on the night of February 20, North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan. This happened two days after the resumption of testing with the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
