The United States is in favor of reform of the UN Security Council, in particular on the use of its members' veto power.

This was stated by US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, informs Evropeyskaya Pravda.

She stressed that Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, dealt a blow to the very basis of the Organization's charter.

“Russia violated national sovereignty and territorial integrity, violated human rights and unleashed open war instead of negotiating peace,” Thomas-Greenfield said.

The US will intensify efforts to reform the Security Council, she said. It is also about changing the rules for vetoing, according to which permanent members must explain them to the General Assembly.

“The Security Council should also better reflect global reality and take into account geographical representation. We should not maintain an outdated status quo. Instead To do this, we must be flexible to compromise in the name of accountability,” the US envoy added.

Thomas-Greenfield also announced consultations with US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken “on critical issues of Security Council reform and others bodies of the UN”.

Recall that the UN Security Council includes five permanent members – Great Britain, China, Russia, the USA, France – and ten members elected by the General Assembly for two years on a geographical basis. Permanent members of the UN Security Council have the right to veto.

Earlier, the United States warned that if Russia buys weapons from the DPRK, it will violate the UN Security Council resolution.
