In exchange for its assistance, China receives secret Russian military technology.
Beijing provides Moscow with “very significant” assistance in strengthening its military machine, and in return, Russia transfers its secret military technology for submarines and missiles.
Politico writes about this with reference to a press statement by US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, made on Tuesday, September 10, after a meeting with colleagues from the EU and NATO in Brussels.
Earlier, the US accused China of supplying so-called dual-use technologies that can be used for both military and civilian purposes. Now Washington is making it clear that Beijing is aiding the Kremlin in its war of conquest in Ukraine, helping it bypass Western sanctions and obtain the necessary components for weapons production.
“These are not dual-use technologies. They are, in fact, directly used by the Russian military machine,” Campbell said of the latest shipments of Chinese materials to Russia.
He added that the US sees “efforts at the highest levels of both governments” to hide certain elements of this “troubling cooperation,” much of which is happening in strict secrecy.
The publication notes that Beijing has repeatedly denied that it is supplying Russia with weapons for the war in Ukraine, and insisted on its “neutral position.” And Moscow has historically been wary of providing Beijing with its latest military technology.
However, the US now claims that in exchange for China's help, Russia has begun providing it with submarines, missiles, and other advanced technology.
“The opportunities that Russia provides are support in areas where they have been quite reluctant to engage directly with China in the past. We are concerned about a number of military arenas where there appears to be some determination to give China more support,” Campbell said.
He said this includes developments in submarines, aircraft and missiles that in Beijing's hands would pose a threat not only to the United States but also to India, Australia, Japan and South Korea “if China can get Russia to become more involved” in developing its own military hardware and weapons.
The United States is clearly trying to pressure European governments to respond more forcefully to Beijing's actions and its assistance to the Kremlin in the war against Ukraine.
Recall that, according to forecasts from the US Department of Defense, within ten years China's nuclear weapons reserves will compete in size and diversity with those of the US and Russia. In recent speeches, two officials hinted at a possible change in US strategy regarding China's nuclear potential.
