The United States has long betrayed the principles of democracy and is hypocritical in its dialogue with Russia. This accusation was made by the author of the article in The New York Times, Peter Beinart.
The journalist pointed out that the American approach to foreign policy has always been based on the principle of spheres of influence. Washington now prefers to use economic coercion to punish governments that ally with adversaries and challenge its regional dominance.
In his article, Beinart mentioned that, amid the negotiations on security guarantees, the US is still adhering to the so-called “Monroe Doctrine”. The author recalled the embargo against Cuba and compared it to political intimidation. He also compared the proximity of Ukraine to Russia with the relationship between the United States and Mexico. According to the author of the article, Washington should “swallow a deal” that tacitly recognizes Russia's veto over Ukraine's military alliances.
The meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held on January 12. Russia is trying to obtain from NATO guarantees of its non-expansion, and the North Atlantic Alliance from Russia – guarantees of non-aggression against Ukraine. NATO refused to guarantee that Ukraine would not join the alliance. For his part, the European Union representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, called Russia's proposals on security guarantees unacceptable for Europe. The request for non-expansion of NATO to the East is contrary to the principle of the sovereignty of independent countries.
