Ceremony of lighting the Eternal Flame at the Liberators Cemetery
In Serbia, unknown persons desecrated the Eternal Flame, recently opened in the memorial to the liberators of Belgrade. This was reported by the Russian Embassy in Serbia, RIA Novosti reports.
The Russian diplomatic mission expressed deep shock at what had happened. “There is a cynical attempt to put Serbia on a par with some European countries, where the war with monuments to anti-fascists and the rewriting of history, unfortunately, have become systemic,” the diplomats said.
The diplomatic mission did not rule out that the vandals acted on orders from outside, hoping to cause discord in relations between Russia and Serbia. Russian diplomats also noted the quick reaction of local authorities to the incident and expressed the hope that the monument will soon be restored and that those responsible will be punished.
The solemn ceremony of lighting the Eternal Flame in the Memorial Park of the Liberators of Belgrade took place on December 15. For this, a particle of the Eternal Flame from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was specially delivered from Moscow.
