Unknown mutation COVID-19 identified in California
A new strain of coronavirus was found in the US state of California, writes The New York Times.
As noted, a new variant of the CAL.20C virus was detected during the search for a “British” strain. The mutated coronavirus was detected in the biomaterials taken.
Experts believe that a new variant of the virus could have appeared in the summer of last year, but showed itself only in the fall. Now CAL.20C has expanded significantly. The newspaper writes that the mutated coronavirus is fixed in more than half of the samples from January 13 in a laboratory in Los Angeles. “The strain did appear here, and it had the opportunity to start emerging and spreading during the holidays,” said an employee at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
There is currently no information on the degree of danger of the new strain. In addition, scientists must determine how quickly it is transmitted.
The number of victims of the coronavirus in the United States on the eve exceeded the mark of 400 thousand, reports Reuters , citing information from state health departments. Deaths have skyrocketed since Christmas. California is one of the leaders in the spread of COVID-19.
Several days ago, a previously unknown mutation of the coronavirus was identified in southern Germany. Because of this, there was an outbreak in the hospital in the Bavarian city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
