A group of scientists from the University of Birmingham believe that the coronavirus can lead to the development of Guillain-Barré syndrome and other autoimmune diseases. The study is reported by the EurekAlert!

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a condition in which a person's immune system attacks its own peripheral nerves. According to the WHO, it can lead to almost complete paralysis. Most common in adult males. Most people recover even with severe cases of the syndrome.

Participants in the study, who had had severe and mild cases of coronavirus, showed numbness in the feet and hands, muscle weakness and pain, and coordination problems. One of the study's authors reported that antibodies produced after illness are similar to those that cause autoimmune diseases of the heart, muscles and skin.
