A 20-year-old woman was bitten while in the water at Jones Beach on Long Island, just outside New York City. Wounds on her leg suggest it may have been a juvenile shark.

The woman herself did not see what bit her, but provided a photo of the wounds. This was reported by 24 Kanal with reference to ABC News.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the victim was waist-deep in water. She suffered minor cuts on her left leg and foot. Doctors said her life was not in danger.

The woman did not see what kind of sea creature bit her. Drones used to monitor the coast did not record any dangerous fauna. Experts, having studied the photos of the bites and the circumstances of the attack, came to the conclusion that the woman was probably bitten by a young sand tiger shark.

Immediately after the incident, authorities closed the beach to swimming to conduct additional inspections. Only the following morning, after a thorough drone survey and lifeguard patrols, was the swimming season allowed to continue.
