The eruptions of underwater volcanoes release enormous amounts of energy. Scientists were able to calculate this volume. As it turned out, there is enough energy to supply an entire country – the United States of America.
Scientists watched as fragments of volcanic rock, called tephra, fly across the sea.
“The results of our work indicate the speed of energy release and show that during the eruption, the output power is sufficient to provide for this time,” the scientists said. The eruption can last as long as several hours or several days.
It is not yet clear how to truly be able to use all this energy. These eruptions occur far offshore and deep below the surface, making them nearly impossible to reach. That is, the chances of using this energy are close to zero.
