UN Security Council convenes emergency meeting on Ukraine—reason

The UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting due to the massive attack by Russia on Ukraine on June 17.

The head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andriy Sybiga, reported this on the social network X.

“We expect the UN Security Council members to take a principled position on the Russian strikes, which have caused numerous civilian casualties. We demand clear signals about the need to increase pressure on the aggressor and strengthen Ukraine, including additional air defense capabilities,” Sybiga wrote.

He recalled that 100 days have already passed since Kyiv agreed to the US proposal for a complete ceasefire.

“Unfortunately, Moscow continues to reject it and intensifies terror against the civilian population. Only pressure can force Russia to choose peace over war,” Sibiga emphasized.

He also noted that Russia's war against Ukraine remains a “serious threat to global stability.” After all, the security of Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific region are directly linked, as the Kremlin, as well as Tehran and Pyongyang, are working together to undermine international peace and security.

“We must remain united and work together to counter these threats,” he added.

Let us recall that on June 17, Kyiv sent a request to convene an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council due to the latest massive Russian attacks on Ukraine.

On the night of June 17, the Russian Federation launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv using drones and missiles.

There are 28 known dead and over 140 injured. Fires and damage to buildings were recorded in seven districts of the capital. In particular, in the Solomensky district, a dormitory of the Kyiv Aviation Institute was destroyed, and an entire entrance of a nine-story residential building was destroyed.
