UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during a speech at an emergency meeting of the organization's General Assembly on February 28, called on the Russian Federation to stop hostilities in Ukraine.
– The hostilities in Ukraine must stop. They rage in the air, on land and at sea. They must stop now. Russian missiles and bombers bombard Ukrainian cities day and night. In the face of ongoing attacks, 3 million residents of Kyiv are forced to seek refuge in their homes, makeshift bomb shelters and city subways, the UN Secretary General said.
He clarified that while Russian strikes were reportedly targeted “on Ukrainian military installations,” there are credible reports that residential buildings, critical civilian infrastructure and other non-military targets were severely damaged.
“This escalating damage that results in civilian deaths, including children, is absolutely unacceptable. Enough. The soldiers must retreat to their barracks and the leaders must move towards peace,” Guterres said.
Earlier, the UN Security Council requested an emergency session of the UN General Assembly due to a new Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
