UN order to stop hostilities: what does it mean for Ukraine and what are the consequences of non-compliance for the Russian Federation

by alex

The decision of the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Russia's cessation of hostilities in Ukraine means that at the highest legal level in the world, it has been recognized and recorded that the Russian Federation is committing illegal military actions on the territory of Ukraine, that it must immediately stop them and, in particular, stop the advancement of its units, as well as the armed formations it supports.

This was announced by Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

The minister also added that in the very text of the decision, the court indicated that no evidence was found in favor of Russia's allegations that Ukraine had committed a genocide crime on its territory.

In addition, Kuleba told what consequences Russia would have if it ignored the UN decision:

— If Russia does not comply with the order, and there are suspicions that it will, this will have a negative impact on the final decision of the court in this case, in particular in the context of determining the amount of compensation that Ukraine should receive. Now anyone who wants to say that there is no Russian aggression will be smashed against the court's decision. This is an important political and legal victory.

At the same time, the exclusion of Russia from the Council of Europe means that Russia will no longer be able to manipulate the mechanisms and conventions of the Council of Europe in its own interests.
