The United Nations Organization (UN), at the request of Russia, recognized May 8 and 9 as World Days of Remembrance for the Victims of World War II. The corresponding resolution, proposed by Moscow, was adopted by the UN General Assembly, reports TASS.

The document was approved by consensus without a vote. It invites all Member States, UN organizations, non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate May 8 and 9, as appropriate, as a tribute to all the victims of World War II.

In addition, the resolution contains a request to the General Assembly to hold a special solemn meeting on December 1, 2020 in memory of all the victims of the war and an appeal to the UN Secretary General to bring the resolution to the attention of all participants and take the necessary measures to implement it.

Gennady Kuzmin, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, recalled that in May of this year it was not possible to hold a traditional ceremonial meeting in memory of the war due to the coronavirus pandemic.
