The European Commissioner called the integration of Ukrainians into the EU labor market quite successful on a global scale.
Many Ukrainian refugees have integrated well into the labor market in the EU countries. Thus, out of 4.3 million Ukrainians, 1.6 million are currently employed.
The European Commissioner for Labour and Social Policy Nicolas Schmidt spoke about this in an interview with Radio Liberty Ukraine.
“Many Ukrainians have integrated well into the labour market. Because those who remain in the EU were offered the opportunity to integrate – to find a job immediately. And many of them did so. Now more than a million people work in different sectors. On a global scale, this has worked quite well,” Schmidt said.
Note that, according to statistics, 57% of Ukrainians with temporary protection are employed in Lithuania, 53% in Denmark, and 48% in Poland. The European Commissioner explained why there is such a high percentage of working Ukrainians in these countries.
“Let's take Lithuania, for example. Lithuania has recognized the diplomas of doctors, medical workers in the healthcare sector. Thus, they are one of the few member states that have recognized such diplomas. Not all member states have done this, at least not as quickly and regularly. Another point is the effectiveness of state employment services, how they help Ukrainians integrate into the labor market. Also – child care, because most Ukrainians who came to the EU are often women with children. They can only work if there is child care. And Denmark has a very well-established child care system. So I think that this partly explains the differences in the level of labor market integration,” Schmidt said.
“The last figure we have is 1.6 million Ukrainians who have been integrated into different labor markets. For comparison, there are currently 4.3 million registered under the temporary protection directive. This is the data for September 24,” the European Commissioner clarified the figures.
He also reported that a little more than 300 thousand Ukrainians are registered in EU countries as unemployed. These are people who would like to work, but did not find a job or an opportunity to work.
According to Schmidt, on a global scale, the integration of Ukrainians into the EU labor market is quite successful.
By the way, in September, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called on the EU to facilitate the development of programs for the return of Ukrainian refugees home.
