There are now more than 19 hours of daylight.
Ukrainian polar explorers at the Akademik Vernadsky station are now observing white nights.
This was reported by the National Antarctic Science Center.
According to them, it is now late spring and very long days. For example, the other day the sun rose at 03:18 and set at 22:50. So the daylight hours are 19 hours 32 minutes and its duration is increasing.
“The longest day at Vernadsky will be December 21 – in the Southern Hemisphere this is the day of the summer solstice. It will last… 22 hours 24 minutes and 42 seconds (by the way, December 22 will be only 1 second shorter). And instead of night for “1.5 hours will be just twilight. Since our station is located north of the Arctic Circle, the phenomenon of polar day – the period when the sun does not set beyond the horizon for more than a day – is not observed here. For comparison: at the South Pole, the duration of the polar day is 184 days,” the message says.
During this period, at night, polar explorers have to curtain their windows and celebrate the New Year with light.
Long daylight hours add more work to meteorologists, especially when the sky is cloudless. Then, using a special device – the Microtops aerosol solar photometer – scientists measure the concentration of aerosols in the atmosphere every hour. Thanks to this, researchers find out how the amount of suspended particles in the atmosphere changes per day, week, month.
This is important, because such seemingly small aerosols play a huge role in shaping weather and climate. Based on such measurements, climate models are then created not only for the polar regions, but for the entire Earth. If the sky is clear, then so many ozone measurements need to be taken that the scientist almost never leaves the ozone office located in the attic, and if there are no clouds both at sunset and at sunrise, then the researcher will not have to sleep. Then the ozometrist carries out special Umker measurements, which make it possible to construct a vertical profile of ozone distribution in the atmosphere,” the scientists noted.
So sunny weather and long days bring polar explorers not only joy, but also a lot of work. But scientists admit that she always makes them happy too.
Let us remind you that polar explorers showed an unusual phenomenon around the Sun on the Vernadsky. They filmed the rainbow.
