The position of Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK Vadym Prystaiko on refusing to join the North Atlantic Alliance for the sake of peace is contrary to the Constitution and will not be put into practice. This was stated in an interview with the Australian Financial Rewiew by a colleague of the diplomat, Chargé d'Affaires of the Republic in Australia Vladimir Shalkivsky.
He called the country's withdrawal from NATO membership impossible and predicted that this would lead to a reaction from the Ukrainian society, which opposes such an idea. In addition, the authors of the idea would have to face the opposition of the Verkhovna Rada, whose deputies would not allow the existing agreements to be broken.
“Any amendments would require an overwhelming majority in parliament, a two-thirds majority,” Shalkivsky assessed the words of his colleague.
Earlier, Prystaiko said in an interview with the BBC that Kiev might abandon the idea of joining NATO in order to prevent a war with Russia. The diplomat pointed out that the country is already being pushed towards this by various threats, but it is being flexible and trying to find the best way out.
