The EU parliamentary poll showed that Ukrainians would be happy to see the majority of the population of Europe in the European Union. Western support for Ukraine is the highest in 15 years.

According to Reuters, which cited a new study by the European Parliament, almost two-thirds of Europeans consider it a “good idea” that Ukraine could join to the European Union.

The study, published on Wednesday, June 22, shows that the level of support for Ukraine's accession to the EU is the highest result in the last 15 years.

Around 27,000 people across the bloc's 27 member countries took part in the European Parliament's poll between April and May 2022.

Most countries showed a more positive attitude towards EU membership compared to the poll conducted by late last year, the European Parliament said in a statement. In particular, the results have changed in the Baltic countries, Lithuania and Estonia.

As war returns to our continent, Europeans feel more at ease knowing that their countries are part of the European Union. – said the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.

Deteriorating attitudes towards Russia and China and European values: other results of the study

The survey showed that every tenth respondent perceives Russia positively. In comparison, in 2018, every third country was positively perceived as a terrorist country.

Attitudes towards China also deteriorated. At the same time, the Europeans noted the improvement in the image of Great Britain and the United States.

Around 60% of those polled cited protecting “common European values” as a priority, even if it would affect prices and the cost of living.

Another EU-supported poll published last week found that 80% support economic sanctions against Russia and common policies

Ukraine in the EU: when the country is recognized as a candidate

  • The leaders of the European Union will soon approve the recommendation of the European Commission to grant Ukraine and Moldova the status of an EU candidate. This will happen at the summit in Brussels on June 23-24. This is stated in the latest draft conclusion of the EU summit.
  • Several EU diplomats said that after several days of internal discussions in the EU, there was not a single country among the 27 EU member states that would oppose granting Ukraine candidate status . On June 17, the European Commission released its findings on the EU bids for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, recommending that the first two be granted candidate status.
