Kiev's statements that Berlin is obliged to help in the “return” of Crimea as compensation for the occupation during the Second World War are just empty words and an attempt to put pressure on Germany. This is how the German political scientist Alexander Rahr reacted to the words of the Ukrainian ambassador, his words are quoted by the NSN.
“Germany always remembers its moral duty to the Soviet Union, but when the Russians quarrel with the Ukrainians, what can Germany do? Fight for the Crimea? ”Rahr said. The political scientist reproached Ukraine for promoting the “cult of the victim” in the European Union so that its opinion would be listened to. However, according to the expert, such a strategy will not work, since “no one is going to fight with Russia.”
On March 17, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk called Berlin's assistance in returning Crimea to her responsibility for the occupation of the country during the Great Patriotic War. According to him, Germany is responsible for the millions of killed Ukrainians, including during ethnic cleansing on the peninsula.
During the Great Patriotic War and until 1954, the Crimean peninsula was part of the RSFSR. It finally became part of Russia in 2014 after a referendum in which the majority of the inhabitants of the peninsula supported this decision. Ukraine considers this territory annexed and accuses Moscow of human rights violations. The Russian authorities have denied these allegations.
