Ukraine Unlikely to Restore 2014 Borders – Pentagon

by alex

Washington does not rule out an international military presence in Ukraine, but notes that it should be implemented on an individual basis without the involvement of the entire Alliance.

New US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said during a meeting of the Ramstein countries that complete de-occupation of Ukrainian territories is unlikely, and also noted that Ukraine's membership in NATO cannot be part of negotiated settlement of the war.

Bloomger writes about this.

“Ukraine's accession to the 2014 borders is unrealistic. The United States also does not believe that Ukraine's membership in NATO is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement,” the head of the Pentagon said.

Washington also notes that all security guarantees for Ukraine should be based on combat-ready military units of both European and non-European countries.

On the possibility of deploying troops in Ukraine, the US Secretary of Defense emphasized that such a mission should not be part of NATO in order to avoid the application of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

“If military units are deployed in Ukraine, this should be a mission outside NATO, which will not fall under Article 5.”

Recall that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Russian President Vladimir Putin's attempt to attack the Alliance countries will end in a crushing defeat for Russia.
