Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that he continues the dialogue with China in order to attract it to participate in the upcoming Global Peace Summit, which will be held in Switzerland. At the same time, Beijing wants to see a representative of Russia at it.

As Kuleba noted, Ukraine and China have never had any problems in any major issues, nor in bilateral relations. Therefore, according to him, there is trust between the countries.

Discussion with Chinese representatives

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, during an online briefing for foreign media, noted that trust reigns in relations between our state and China.

The main peace proposal , which is now on the table in the world is the Ukrainian peace formula proposed by President Zelensky. And we are working on it, including convening the first peace summit,” said the Ukrainian official.

According to him, this was and remains the subject of discussion with Chinese representatives.

At the same time, Kuleba believes that China has very great potential to end Russia’s war against Ukraine due to the “special” relationship between Moscow and Beijing.

China wants to see Russia

Officials recently reported that China is trying to persuade Europe to allow Russia to sit at the table in future peace talks. We are talking about the Global Peace Summit, which will take place in Switzerland.

It is noted that otherwise Beijing will boycott such meetings in every possible way. This position of China became clear during the European tour of the Chinese government's special representative for Eurasian affairs, Li Hui.

In particular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Li promised to support the convening of a peace conference “with equal participation of all parties.”

Recall that in early March 2024, the media wrote that the Chinese government’s special representative for Eurasian issues, Li Hui, visited Moscow. After this, he stated that Kyiv would not be able to achieve peace in any other way other than negotiations with the aggressor. The Russian side also adheres to the same position.

The Beijing envoy stated that “any discussion of a political and diplomatic settlement is impossible without the participation of Russia and taking into account its interests in the security sphere.”

Xi Jinping will come to Europe for the first time since the pandemic: briefly

  • Xi Jinping will meet with Emmanuel Macron in early May 2024 in Paris. China is likely seeking to restore damaged relations with Europe due to Xi Jinping's “unlimited partnership” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite the war in Ukraine.
  • However, the mood in France will be different from what it was on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of relations between the countries. It is noted that it will be less festive and more business-like, given the current economic and geopolitical stakes.
  • This visit will be watched in the US and Europe. Moreover, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will visit China in April.
