A corresponding request made by Ukraine a week ago is being considered.
Ukraine appealed to the US presidential administration with a request to help determine goals for Russian territories that Kyiv could strike with its own weapons. Kyiv asks Washington to lift restrictions on the use of American weapons at military facilities on Russian territory.
Writes about this The Wall Street Journal with reference to American and defense officials.
The publication writes that such a request appeared against the backdrop of the largest territorial seizures by Russia over the past 18 months in the northeastern part of the Kharkov region.
American officials told reporters that the request made by Ukraine a week ago is being considered.
If Washington supports Kyiv's request, it will radically change the tactics of the White House, which has sought to avoid the risks of military escalation while supporting the Ukrainians.
“They did ask [the United States] for help to strike Russia. It was not about a specific weapon system, but for additional help in striking the Russians,” said US Air Force General C. Kay Brown.
Ukraine was forced to send part of its troops to the Kharkov region after the start of the Russian offensive, which led to new overloads of forces that were already exhausted and were waiting for help from the United States.
The publication notes that Ukraine received surface-to-surface missile systems and other ATACMS weapons systems from the United States on the condition that they would not be used to strike targets on Russian territory.
Russia, in turn, threatened to “cross the red line” if the United States transferred longer-range weapons to the Ukrainians. However, since that time, Russia itself has received ballistic missiles from North Korea and constantly uses Iranian drones to attack Ukrainian infrastructure.
Russia is moving forces and assets into northeastern Ukraine from safe territory nearby, intensifying attacks in the Kharkov region.
Recall that it was previously reported that The Ukrainian Armed Forces claim that neither the ammunition associated with the “Czech plan” nor the aid package from the United States reached them.
In addition, we previously reported that The United States did not allow Ukraine to use its weapons to strike Russia.
