ISW cannot confirm the Russian Defense Ministry's statements about the Russians' advance.

Ukrainian and Russian troops continued to advance in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region amid hostilities.

This is evidenced by geolocation Data released on September 15, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

They indicate that Ukrainian forces recently advanced south of Veseloye (southwest of Glushkovo) and west and north of Medvezhye (southeast of Veseloye). Additional geolocation data released on September 16 indicates that Russian forces recently advanced southeast of Veseloye.

US analysts suggest that Ukrainian forces recently advanced northwest of Viktorovka and west of Gordeyevka (both south of Korenevoye). On September 16, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) said that Ukrainian forces attacked south of Korenevoye near Byakhovo and Viktorovka; southwest of Korenevoye near Krasnooktyabrskoye; southeast of Korenevoy in the Lyubimovka area; and northwest of Sudzha in the Malaya Loknya area.

Russian Army Advances

ISW notes that Russian troops recently recaptured some territory in the Kursk region amid the continuation of Russian counterattacks in the area on September 16. Geolocation footage released on September 16 indicates that Russians have recently advanced into northern Obukhovka (southeast of Korenevo).

The aggressor country's ministry claimed that Russian forces had allegedly captured Uspenovka (south of Korenevo and on the Russian-Ukrainian border) and Borki (southeast of Sudzha), although ISW has not seen confirmation of these claims. Russian mibloggers claimed that Russian troops counterattacked near Lyubimovka.

The Financial Times, citing a high-ranking representative of Ukrainian military intelligence, reported on September 16 that Russian troops had deployed 38,000 troops to combat operations in the Kursk region, including assault brigades transferred from southern Ukraine.

Recall that the day before, the Kursk region authorities announced the evacuation of settlements in the Rylsky and Khomutovsky districts bordering on the border with Ukraine.
