Ukraine aims for bipartisan support to avoid involvement in US elections – media

The Zelensky Administration is working to maintain an even-handed approach to unpredictable and fast-moving events in Washington.

Ukraine will continue to maintain ties with Republicans and Democrats and avoid being drawn into US domestic politics and the likely fight between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

The Guardian writes about this with reference to officials in the OP.

As noted, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Sunday paid tribute to outgoing Joe Biden, thanking him for his “unwavering support.” He praised the US President's “bold steps” in response to “challenging times” and the Russian invasion in 2022.

“He supported our country at the most dramatic moment in history, helped us prevent Putin from occupying our country, and continued to support us throughout this terrible war,” Zelensky wrote on social networks.

He said he “sincerely hopes that continued strong American leadership will prevent Russian evil from succeeding or paying off for its aggression.”

The Zelensky administration is working to maintain an even-handed approach to unpredictable and fast-moving events in Washington. Her top priority is to avoid becoming embroiled in domestic political infighting in the United States, which could ultimately weaken her fight against Moscow.

“Our official position is clear. We are looking for bipartisan support,” one of the sources said, declining to say what Harris — as a presidential candidate or potential future president — might mean for Ukraine.

The result of the November US elections will not change Ukraine’s international priorities, sources added. The main one is to end the war – not by freezing the current front line, but by a “fair” settlement. This can only happen with strong leadership and support from the United States, they say. In addition, Kyiv wants favorable solutions to weaken Russian potential.

At the same time, the Biden administration has refused to allow US long-range weapons to hit targets inside Russia, such as military airfields. They are used to launch cruise missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Zelensky has repeatedly called for the removal of these US red lines, most recently in London, where he met with Keir Starmer and addressed the cabinet. It is unknown whether future President Harris will be more sympathetic to Ukraine's arguments.

Recall that after Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy for the election, 78-year-old Donald Trump unexpectedly became the oldest presidential candidate in American history.
